The first line of defense against skin cancer is PREVENTION. Reducing or preventing your risk of skin cancer will more than likely require you to make several lifestyle changes, however, these changes could save your life.
- Avoid sun exposure during peak times (10am – 4pm) – Summer (9am-5pm)
- Use sunscreen year-round SPF 30 or higher with UVA and UVB protection
- Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours (1-2 ounces minimum)
- Wear protective clothing, brim hats, and sunglasses with UPF and UVP protection
- Stay away from indoor tanning beds
- Children under 6 months should never be exposed to the sun
- Self-examine head to toe every month; look for unusual moles, growths, or bumps
- See a dermatologist at least once per year
- Eat a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables
- Know your family history and personal risk factors
